About Womens Day

Womens Day or International Women's Day (IWD) is celebrated all over the world annually on March 8. It is celebrated to commemorate women for their achievements in the field of culture, politics, and socioeconomic. On this day, a number of programs and events are organized to bring attention to issues related to women. Those issues include gender equality, reproductive rights, and violence against women. These events make people aware of all the problems that a woman faces in her life. Furthermore, they encourage people to get rid of these problems so that women can live a better and equal life in this world.

International Women's Day originated from labor movements in North America and Europe during the early 20th century. On February 28, 1909, the earliest version of Women's Day was organized by the Socialist Party of America in New York City. Inspired by this, in 1910, German delegates proposed that a special Women's Day be organized annually at the International Socialist Women's Conference with no set date. The following year, the first International Women's Day was celebrated across Europe. Furthermore, after women gained suffrage in Soviet Russia in 1917, IWD was made a national holiday on March 08. Then, it was subsequently celebrated on that date by the socialist movement and communist countries. Moreover, it remained associated with far-left movements and governments until its adoption by the global feminist movement in the late 1960s. Then, In 1977, International Womens Day became a global holiday following its adoption by the United Nations.

International Womens Day is celebrated in a variety of ways throughout the world. In several countries, this day is a public holiday whereas in others it is observed socially or locally. Every year, the UN connects this day with a particular issue in women's rights and also proposes a particular theme in commemoration to this day. In 2019, the UN theme for International Women's Day was 'Think equal, build smart, innovate for change'. In 2021, the UN theme for International Women's Day was 'I am Generation Equality: Realizing Women's Rights’. Furthermore, in 2021, the UN theme for International Women's Day was 'Women in leadership: Achieving an equal future in a COVID-19 world’.
