Navratri is the post-monsoon autumn festival called Sharada Navaratri, named after Sharada which means autumn. It is a ten days long festival and celebrated in the bright half of the Hindu lunar calendar month Ashvin. In many regions, the festival falls after the autumn harvest, and in others during harvest. Moreover, it falls in the months of September and October of the Gregorian calendar. There are a total of four seasonal Navratris in which Sharada Navaratri is the most celebrated one.
Furthermore, the reason for celebrating Navaratri differs in various regions of India. In the eastern and northeastern states of India, this festival celebrates the battle and victory of goddess Durga over the buffalo demon Mahishasur to help restore Dharma. Whereas, in the northern and western states, this festival celebrates the battle and victory of god Rama over the demon king Ravana.
